Lotus of Shinobazuno Pond in Ueno Onshi Park Outline

Shinobazunoike Pond was created in the Edo period (1603-1868) as a lotus pond for Kan-eiji Temple, and since the Meiji period (1868-1912) it has been a popular recreational spot for ward residents. Every year in late June, lotus leaves begin to cover the surface of the water, and in mid-July, white, peach, and light red flowers bloom in the early morning. Since the lotus flowers open slowly at sunrise and close in the morning, it is best to visit early in the morning, just after the park opens, from mid-July to mid-August, when the best viewing time is from mid-July to mid-August.
A floating pier called the “lotus-viewing deck” has been installed in the park, allowing visitors to stretch their legs to admire the pond near its center. With Benten-do Hall and the stone bridge on Shinobazu-dori Avenue in the background, the scenery looks like a painting in combination with the appearance of an old temple. Wind chimes are lined up along the deck, and the sounds of summer can be felt.
The lotuses bloom in the morning and close in the afternoon, so early morning is recommended.
