Chiba City Ooga Lotus Festival 2025 Overview
In 1951, a team led by Dr. Ichiro Ohga excavated ancient lotus seeds about 2,000 years old from a stratum in Chiba City. One of the seeds successfully germinated, and in July of the following year, 1952, it produced a large, pale red flower. Since then, it has been named the “Ohga Lotus” and has become known both in Japan and abroad as the world’s oldest lotus. About 900 of these romantic Ooga lotus flowers bloom in late June.
The large, pale pink blossoms swaying in the cool early morning breeze are a sight to behold from the lotus pavilion, and it is truly a sight of ancient romance to think that the same flowers were in full bloom 2,000 years ago.
