Minamisawa Hydrangea Mountain, Akiruno City, Tokyo 2025 Hydrangea Overview
This mountain of hydrangeas was built by local resident Chuichi Minamisawa (a.k.a. “Chiaichan”). In the 1960s, he planted 20 seedlings in the woods to decorate the path to his parents’ graves with flowers, and in the 50 years since then, he has single-handedly increased the number of hydrangeas to 10,000. Today, about 15,000 hydrangeas of about 60 varieties are planted.
Minamisawa Hydrangea Mountain is a precious spot where about 15,000 hydrangeas of about 60 species bloom along a trail that takes about 3 to 40 minutes to walk around. Visitors can enjoy the colorful blooming hydrangeas as they walk along the trail, enjoying the streams and chirping of wild birds. Free rental of hydrangea-patterned umbrellas is available, so even in the rain, you don’t have to worry and look great in photos.
Original products such as hydrangea beer and hydrangea soft serve ice cream are also available.
Enjoy hydrangeas in a natural setting that will make you forget you are in Tokyo, even though you are in the city.
