Tochigi-shi Tochigi-shi Taiheizan Hydrangea Slope Tochigi-Ahydrangea Festival 2025 Outline
The “Hydrangea Slope,” the main approach to the Taiheizan Shrine, began in 1974 when the Lions Club began planting trees, mainly Western hydrangeas. Since then, a total of about 2,500 hydrangeas, including Gaku hydrangea and Yama hydrangea, have grown on both sides of the 1,000 stone steps, blending in naturally. The stone steps are piled on top of each other, creating a rustic atmosphere. In early summer, the stone steps turn into a spectacular flower path with blue, pink, and white colors, and visitors can enjoy the colorful scenery as they leisurely walk down the stone steps. Visitors who use the Ajisai-zaka parking lot will receive a 100 yen discount coupon for dumplings, which can be used at any of the tea stores. Also, events such as performances by the Nikko Monkey Army and Nankin Tamasudare will be held every Saturday and Sunday during the festival period.
Please enjoy the “feast of stone steps and flowers” unique to Taiheizan against the backdrop of blue sky and fresh greenery.

- The sight of approximately 2,500 hydrangeas blooming on both sides of the tasteful stone steps piled up in the field is reminiscent of an ancient Japanese landscape.
- Hydrangeas blooming against the backdrop of a deep green forest in early summer are lovely, with their vivid colors standing out.
- Visitors can also enjoy performances of traditional performing arts such as Tamasudare, Karakuri Dolls, and Nikko Sarugundan. Popular with children.
